Founded in 1971 by nature-loving industrialists Adrienne & Pierre Sommer and based in Paris, the Fondation Adrienne et Pierre Sommer is a private, financially independent non-profit organization dedicated to the development of animal-assisted activities in France as well as to children’s education about pets and domesticated animals.​

ISAZ was formed in 1991 as a supportive organization for the scientific and scholarly study of human-animal interactions. ISAZ is a non-profit, non-political organization with a worldwide, multi-disciplinary membership of students, scholars and interested professionals.
